Quest-types

Page history last edited by Sheikah 11 years, 9 months ago

-Make quests different, unique.

-Adding small secrets to all the towns and places will give it a nice feel.

-Lots of subplots tying in to main plot and lots of twists.

-Think of different ways of attaining quests as well. Not just from NPCs. Read a book/scroll and gain a quest from an old legend. A certain digivolution could trigger a quest. The character working something out or discovering something could lead to a quest.

-Have things tailored to the night/day cycle; not just digimon coming out at night, storylines that start at night/npcs of a storyline that only appear at night, certain events happening only at night, etc and same with the daytime. So you have to play in a different way to experience new things.

-Delivery - pick-up/drop off quests, fedex tasks

-Find - collection tasks, fetch/collect/gather

-Guard duty - guard, protect, escort

-Kill, assassinate, bounty - monster on the loose, kill it - etc, kill the minions but dont kill the boss - disable him to stop attacks,

-Steal

-Rescue - rescue a dragon from a princess, mix it up

-Recon/explore - explore area to gain information, find a landmark/ancient digimon and make a sketch/take evidence back

-Build/craft

-Free someone - innocent or not

-Race someone - 'get to so-and-so and get item/get to NPC before thief/enemy does'

-Follow - sneak after someone in the town without being noticed, then you get entrance to an item/hidden way you normally wouldn't have found

-General tasks/jobs around towns - eg help someone move into a store

Delivery

The character is sent to deliver an item from one location to another. Sometimes the character may need to collect the item first instead of being handed the item to deliver when starting the quest. These quests are made challenging by asking the character to journey through unfamiliar terrain, sometimes with a time limit.

Ideas of what to deliver:  Information/good or bad news, letters, present, items,

Find

Require the character to collect a number of items. Can be gathered from a location or environment, or require the character to kill creatures in order to collect the required items. The quest may also require the character to collect a number of different items, for example to assemble a device.

Ideas of what to find/gather:  Information, a certain item/a curio, a certain person/'mon, find a certain someone to battle, find the next town, find something hidden eg a hidden island, object or person thats been missing/no one else can find it, collect keys to open doors/something else to later reach something/someone, finding enough gold to ransom a certain prisoner, a buildings collapsed and you have to rescue someone/items from the rubble, finding someone that knows the only means to produce a key compontent of some item, find and train with a legendary hero/royal knight, who's gone into the wilds/not been heard of in a while, someones misplaced/lost something and needs it back/misses it,

How you'd find - ideas:  From other characters, steal, raiding hideouts or homes of enemies

Exploration

Finding landmarks/certain digimon, exploring an area to gain information or checking something/someone is still there.

Kill

Sends character out to kill either a specific number of named creatures, or a specific non-player character or NPC. These types of quests often require the character to bring back proof of their work, such as trophies, or body parts (tusks, pelts, etc).

Escort

Combination of slaying monsters to maintain the well-being of an NPC all while exploring an area alongside that NPC. Protecting a character while as you move through a monster-infested area. Escort quests can force the player's focus to a particular area in order to play out a scene or reveal a section of the plot, or can lead a character to a new location. Problems are NPC AI.

Ideas:

-Maybe meant to escort someone but halfway through he attacks you, you find out he's infected or he gets deleted.

-Have to protect a wounded 'mon you've found from it's attackers.

-'Look after my friend'

Guard duty

Ideas:

-Have to defend a position, maybe a house or fighting to get control of somewhere/a town?

-'Watch my crops/farm'

Hybrids

Elements from the above types can be combined - works better. Combining types and adding story is where it gets interesting. Hybrid quests may also include puzzles and riddles.

Quest chains

A group of quests that are completed in sequence. Completion of each quest is a prerequisite to starting the next quest in the chain. The quests usually increase in difficulty as the player progresses through the chain. Typically follow a single plotline that explains reasons for the quests. Quest chains can start with opening or 'breadcrumb' quests, in order to encourage characters to journey to a new area, where further elements of the quest chain are revealed. Plot is disclosed as the character progresses.
